The GNEMSDC Connecticut Supplier Diversity Golf Outing will once again be held at the Lyman Orchards Golf Club on Friday, July 12. Due to the limited spots available we are asking for sponsors to provide us with the names of their guests by TODAY. Also, due to the limited space, once we sell out we will close registration for the event.
One of the main attractions of this event is getting MBEs and Corporate members together. If you are interested in a fun morning of golf, networking, food, drinks and relationship building please fill out the registration form and email it to Jerilynn Clarke at jclarke@gnemsdc.org

The How to do Business with Prince Lobel Tye LLP event that was scheduled for June 26th is cancelled. However, Prince Lobel wants to do business with GNEMSDC certified MBEs. | NMSDC Purchasing Activity Report Due |
 Every year the NMSDC asks the regional Councils to collect information on corporate member spending with certified MBEs. It is that time of the year again. Now we are asking for each local member of the GNEMSDC to complete this short form. There are instructions included below. If you have the information readily available on MBE spending, the form should not take more than 30 minutes to complete. If you do not have ready access to this information, this is something the GNEMSDC might be able to help you with. Also I must say there is no shame in numbers and the information you supply is confidential. We are not asking for the names or the specific amounts of specific contracts. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call me, 203-288-9744.
National Members of the NMSDC will be contacted by the NMSDC for their rerports and do not have to complete this document. Thank you for your cooperation and support. Knowing your combined impact on minority business development is absolutely necessary for the continued success of the mission.

The NMSDC is going through the most significant and important change in its structure since its founding over 40 years ago. I am privileged to be a participant in this process. The plan is to have the organization restructured by the end of this calendar year. You may have heard rumors about the "New" NMSDC. Below is the first public presentation on the The Strategic Network Restructuring. There will be more information released as the restructuring becomes clearer in coming weeks. As we receive these public messages, we will share them with our stakeholders. I am also happy to speak with anyone on the plan and how it will likely impact the GNEMSDC.

Banneker Industries Named a Best Place to Work
|
For the second consecutive year, Banneker Industries, Inc has been honored as one of the Best Places to Work in Rhode Island by Providence Business News(PBN) and Best Company Group.
Banneker Industries was ranked 19th in the small employer category, which consists of businesses with 15 to 49 employees working in the state of R.I. The rankings were revealed by PBN on June 13 at an awards gala that celebrated the 50 employers named to the 2013 Best Places to Work in Rhode Island list.

And Finally III... Musing on Minority Business Development

 I am very pleased to announce that my third book that chronicles the And Finally column and the various essays on the topic of Minority Business Development will be released as an e-book on July 10.
The book "And Finally III... Musing on Minority Business Development" covers the period January 1, 20011 though December 31 2012. This two year period was an exciting time for the Council, the economy, the country, and the world. This book is 189 pages half size of the last And Finally books.
All of the proceeds for the book will be donated to the GNEMSDC. So this is a great way to have your own personal record of this historic time and support the Council

And Finally...
|
I was involved in two races this weekend. The first on Friday night in New Haven was a debate of the seven candidates vying to become Mayor of the Elm City. New Haven will have a new mayor after 20 years of dedicated service by John DeStefano. I was asked to be a panelist in the debate Friday night at the Varick AME Zion Church on Dixwell Avenue. The focus on this debate was public education. In New Haven over 50 percent of the students are attending "failing" schools. So the topic is near the top of the list in this election. Little did I know when I accepted this role as panelist that it would be a standing room only crowd. I was prepared with some questions that were offered by the organizers of the debate. I dutifully asked the first provided question to each of the seven candidates. But with time running out, I decided to go off script and ask a question of the candidates on what they saw as the connection between business development in this majority minority city and the quality of public education; and if they were to become mayor: What would they do to improve both? I am not a New Haven resident and will withhold judgment on the quality of the answers I received, but it was clear to me that not all of the candidates had spent the time thinking about this important link. And I hope the residents of New Haven push the candidates to address this link - New Haven Mayoral Candidates blast school lottery system, agree parents need options
The second race I was involved in this weekend was as a participant in the Fairfield Half Marathon (13.1 miles). I am not proud of my time, but I did finish the race on an extremely hot day for a half marathon.
The first of these two races is significantly more important than the second. The stakes are higher and it really matters if you finish first, second or seventh. In the second race it will not every be recorded in the history books who finished in what place out of the 5,000 runners, but for each runner that finished it may be a milestone in their lives.
In some races we compete against others and in others, we compete against ourselves. Sometimes we win and sometimes we don't. But the important thing is that we are in the game and we finish the race. It is not always easy or pretty. But in politics, running and business, we must finish the race and give it your best shot. When you do, you can look back at the experience no matter what the outcome and smile. Because ultimately the biggest race is against ourselves.
