MBEs Are Looking to Buy Corporate Assets and Business Units
expo 2The next phase of minority business development will be characterized by minority entrepreneurs buying business units or whole businesses that were once owned by non-minority owners or were publicly traded businesses.  We want to encourage all of our corporate members to consider the GNEMSDC as source of willing and capable entrepreneurs who are interested in taking over divisions, business units, product lines or facilities.  If your company is considering such strategic moves, we want to be in the mix.

We will keep all inquiries confidential.  You should contact me directly at fmckinney@gnemsdc.org.

Federal Government Opportunities - The OSDBU
The federal government is entering into the final days of Fiscal Year 2012.  Usually at this time of year, most departments of the federal government have money in their budgets that have not been spent.  At a recent meeting I attended in Memphis, the Director of the Office of Small Disadvantaged Business Utilization for the Department of the Interior commented that there is a policy directive for departments across the federal government to use as many small businesses as possible when spending the remainder of their budgets.

The Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU), Office of the Secretary, is the primary point of contact for every federal department's small business program.  The website for the Department of the Interior is http://www.doi.gov/pmb/osdbu/index.cfm.    This website has informative documents including "Doing Business with DOI" and "Introduction to Interior Acquisitions:  A Guide for Small Businesses".  These documents provide an in-depth understanding of the Interior Department's procurement and small business program, and their eight decentralized bureaus and individual offices.  Via the same website you may also obtain a directory of  Small Business Specialistswho are positioned to assist you in gaining access to program managers and other decision-makers.  The even better news is that they have OSDBUs within every department of the federal government.

Before you contact a Small Business Specialist, please ensure that you have a suitable capability statement (a sample capability statement is also available via the website above).  Once you have produced your capability statement, please ensure that it addresses the need of that bureau or office.  The Small Business Specialists is your direct contact for information regarding present and future solicitations or procurement opportunities.

Remember, the federal government is the largest procurement organization in the world.  Have you tried to enter their supply chain?

Preparing for the GNEMSDC Trade Expo - Corporate Members & MBEs

Before you come to trade show, make sure you have the Trade Show's information; including registration information, schedules and agenda (see above), exhibitors list and floor plans and most importantly bring plenty of  business cards.

Identify your goals. - What exactly do you want to accomplish at this Trade Show?  Do you want to gain exposure to potential customers who might be interested in your products, increase visibility, or see what the competition is up to?

Put your Trade Show plan in writing. - The plan should include a detailed schedule, a full list of preparation tasks, and an individual assigned for each task.  Never leave anything to chance, or "we'll catch that later...".

Order all Trade Show supplies early, including brochures and giveaways.- Take care of any marketing material updates or redesigns early.  Don't run the risk of having nothing to hand out!  Design clear forms (to eliminate guesswork) for filling out prospect information.  Consider giveaways to generate attention and a bit of excitement.  These don't have to be expensive - pens with your web address and a catchy slogan can be just as effective.  Be creative with something specific to your industry.  Think of something that someone did at a previous Trade Show that impressed you, and then steal it!

Home Sweet Home - Design an open, inviting booth. - Invite attendees to come in to "your home" with an open booth design, with no obstructing tables or displays.  Maximize "walking around" space by mounting brochure displays on walls.  Use interesting graphics to catch peoples' eyes.  Your logo should be big enough to be seen from a good distance. For demos, laptops and flat-screen monitors are space-efficient.  Think about providing comfortable chairs to encourage prospects to linger (space permitting).
Create a unique identity for your Trade Show personnel. - Decide on the dress code for your people.  Matching vests, Golf shirts, or even boutonnieres will make your representatives easily identifiable.  To avoid that "rumbled uniform" look by the third day of the show, make sure everyone has spare shirts.

Train your Trade Show personnel before each show. - Your people need to know what is expected of them.  They need to be briefed on all new features and offerings.  They must know how to run the demos and presentations, and they should know some basic trouble shooting.  Nothing looks more unprofessional then demos that don't work, and supposed "experts" fumbling for an answer.

Perhaps the most important thing for you and your staff to bring is a winning attitude. You are going to be successful. You are prepared for that success. You are good and you deserve the success you are about to achieve.

In your service,

Dr. Fred
