2010 Census Shows Big Gains for Hispanic Population

Early releases from the 2010 U.S. Census report large population gains for Hispanic Americans. Growth in the Hispanic population accounted for over one half of total U.S. population growth between 2000 and 2010. Total Hispanic population grew from 35.3 million in 2000 to 50.5 million in 2010, a 43 percent rate of growth over the decade. The increase was accounted for largely by higher birth rates for Hispanics compared to non-Hispanics.

The Census also reported that Blacks continued to move out of some metropolitan areas. New York City and Washington D.C. saw declines. For New York City the decline in Black population was the first since 1860.

These demographic shifts have significant implications for businesses, the public sector and communities. I will be addressing the implications of some of these changes at a conference sponsored by the Boston Globe on May 26.

And Finally...

Fred in ohio

"Vanity vanity all is vanity." Last week I woke up like any other morning. Took my shower, brushed my teeth and gazed into the mirror at the object of my deepest affection. But for some reason I noticed seemingly for the first time that the scraggly beard I have been attempting to grow is just about all white. What happened to me. I thought you were supposed to age gracefully not all in an instant like the length of a Hollywood marriage. So like any self respecting Adonis I considered dying it like Walt Frazier the NY Knicks great, but I thought that would make matters worse as my bathroom became a chemical lab dedicated to illusion and self deception. So the next best option is to just shave it off with the unrealistic hope that when it comes back it will black. Is it not the case that we are vain, or should be vain about our businesses? Vanity is not all bad. The philosopher Bertrand Russell said that "vanity is a motive of immense potency." So while there is little for me to do restore my youthful vanity, business owners should channel their vanity into bringing into reality their vision of a successful enterprise.

In your service,

Dr. Fred
