News: Executive Order to increase state contracts signed by Rhode Island Gov. Chafee
RBBAThe Rhode Island Black Business Association issued this press release (abbreviated):

Today, Governor Lincoln D. Chafee signed Executive Order 13-05, designed to reflect the changing demographics of Rhode Island's population through greater representation of minorities in the state workforce and minority-owned business enterprises (MBEs) in state contracts.  Today is a good day for people of color in Rhode Island.  For over a year, the Rhode Island Black Business Association (RIBBA) and other organizations have been advocating for this executive order to be implemented.  RIBBA hopes by this law Executive Order 13-05, our beloved state's workforce and contracts will better reflect the ever changing demographics. The Governor's Executive Order is modeled largely on similar measures issued by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick in 2007 and 2010. RIBBA intends to request profile of current statistics from the State to benchmark progress and insure the engagement of ongoing effective strategies.  RIBBA will monitor progress over time to ensure compliance, accountability, and representation reflective of the population the State Serves.

The Order calls for the Director of the Department of Administration to make recommendations for positive outcomes by August 1. It also calls for annual reports, diversity training and for other state agencies to collaborate in this diversity effort.

Welcome to GNEMSDC Baby Autumn and Baby Sidnie!
Dr Fred and Autumn
This week while in Boston I was on a phone call with a key stakeholder, and in the background outside of my office, baby Autumn let out small protest trying to get the attention of her mother Joanne Wang.  On the other end of the phone, there was a pause, and then a question:  Is there a baby in your office?  My answer, well of course there are
babies in our office.  Both Joanne Wang and Andie Kim gave birth to a baby girl over the past 8 months.

It is my firm belief as a father of two adult children and having experienced first hand the anxiety and disruption that taking care of babies has on  the life of families, that employers should be as flexible as possible when it comes to child care, particularly baby care.  To that end, I informed both mothers that they are welcome to bring their babies to work with them.  So far, this experiment in accommodation has worked out beautifully for all.  So before I get accused of breaking child labor laws, know that I am only asking baby Autumn and baby Sidnie to only work on things that are not over their past work experiences.  And the "Baby Industrial Complex" should not fear that this small step towards work/life sanity will threaten them in any significant way.  But in all seriousness, it is working, and I encourage you to drop by and introduce yourself to our two new lovely additions.

And, Happy Mother's Day to all.
And Finally...
Fred in ohio
I think I said it all above.  It is good to know when enough is enough.  Enjoy your week.

In your service,

Dr. Fred
