GNEMSDC Second Quarterly Meeting May 11, 2011

Raytheon -REGISTRATION CLOSED!

Raytheon

The GNEMSDC Second Quarterly Meeting will take place at the

Raytheon on Wednesday, May 11 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The corporate host for this event is Raytheon. The event will take place at 1001 Boston Post Road East in Marlborough, MA.

This Quarterly meeting will be different from previous Quarterly meetings because Raytheon will allow 20 MBEs to set up table top displays - a mini Trade Show at the facility for Raytheon buyers, engineers and Quarterly meeting attendees to visit that afternoon. Also Raytheon will have business unit buyers on hand to meet directly with MBEs. If you are interested in "exhibiting" at the Quarterly, please let us know. We encourage all MBEs interested in attending to visit the Raytheon website to get a better understanding of what Raytheon buys and sells.

If you have not registered for this event, please do not plan on attending. Registration is now closed. We will not be able to let you into the meeting if you have not already registered. If you have registered please make every effort to attend.

Once you arrive at the facility, you might want to leave any cell phones with cameras in your vehicle. Cameras are not allowed in the facility.

If you have any questions call the office, 888-874-7114 or email Jerilynn Clarke atjclarke@gnemsdc.org.

Certification Notification - Shredding Documents and Information Security

We are very fortunate to have a young intern, Brandon Cooper, working for us in the Hamden office and a brand new shredder donated by Gil Kirby of NISCO (a certified MBE). The intern and the shredder are doing some serious damage. We are now shredding all MBE files whose certification has expired and not renewed within the given time frame. What does this mean to you? It means, keep your certification active by re-certifying within the time allotted, otherwise, you will have to start all over with a new application and pay the full New Certification fee. If you do not keep your certification current. Brandon is waiting for you!

Last Chance for GNEMSDC Scholarship(s) Kellogg

This is your last chance to apply for a GNEMSDC Scholarship to attend the NMSDC/Kellogg School of Business Advanced Management Education Program. Some of the top business professors in the country are involved in this program that is celebrating its 15th year. The program starts on June 5 and ends June 9 and takes place on the Kellogg School of Business campus just north of Chicago.

If you are interested in attending the program and a scholarship from the GNEMSDC, contact the office this week. Going to Kellogg might just change your business.

And Finally...

Fred in ohio

All of our certified MBEs are privately held, often closely held companies. As such, they unlike public corporations are not required to share financial information with the public. This privacy has its advantages and disadvantages. Privacy itself is an advantage. But one disadvantage of privacy is the lack of transparency and what that means for judging the quality of management. I am not suggesting that MBEs put their financial information on their websites, but the practice, discipline and expense of having audited financials creates the pressure on MBEs to manage their resources effectively and efficiently. Effective management benefits shareholders and positions the firm for growth and development even when those shareholders may be a small group of owner/managers. Public scrutiny of private companies is not the answer, but assessment of managerial effectiveness is important in both public and private companies.

As a 501-C 3 not-for-profit corporation our financial records are open to be viewed by anyone on demand. This is a fantastic part of the law that creates transparency while allowing organizations to provide charitable services. As the chief executive of this non-profit, I view my role as a steward of the resources entrusted to the Council for the benefit of our mission of building stronger minority businesses and therefore stronger communities in both minority and non-minority communities. I encourage you to take a look at the 2010 audited financials of the GNEMSDC for 2010. I will also let you in on a little secret, that you have the right to ask any 501 C-3 for their financials and you can also find those financials at guidestar.org. While financial success is not the goal of a not-for-profit, being able to sustain the operation speaks to the quality of the organization, its board of directors, stakeholders, supporters and management. I want to thank all of our supporters for making 2010 the best financial year in the 36 year history of the organization. The stronger we are the better able we are to accomplish our mission. But none of this happens without you. Thank you.

In your service,

Dr. Fred
