Save the Date:  MBE Capital Summit
Eastern BkDate:  March 14th, 2013  1:00pm - 5:00pm
Location:  Eastern Bank  195 Market St  Lynn, MA

The GNEMSDC 3rd Annual MBE Capital Summit is hosted by Eastern Bank on March 14th starting at 1pm. This year our Keynote speaker will be John W. Rogers, Jr. Chairman, CEO & Chief Investment Officer at Ariel Investments, Chicago IL.

John W. Rogers, Jr. started Ariel in 1983 at age 24. His original business plan was elegantly simple - buy undervalued small and medium-sized stocks with a proven ability to grow over the long-term, and hold them until they reach full value. The seeds of this philosophy were planted at age 12 when John started to receive gifts of stock from his father on Christmas. Initially unimpressed by the envelopes under the tree - until the dividend checks started coming in - John's fascination with stocks and investing was born. When he launched Ariel, he started a newsletter as a way to advertise his young firm. It was called The Patient Investor, and its masthead featured a turtle.

Much has changed since those early days, yet much has stayed the same. More than 29 years later, we still spend every day searching for undervalued stocks that have demonstrated an ability to grow. Our quarterly report to our shareholders is called The Patient Investor, the masthead turtle is now the firm logo and "slow and steady wins the race, the timeless lesson from Aesop's fable, is our motto.

From our host organization, opening remarks will be made by Bob Rivers, President & Chief Operating Officer at Eastern Bank and a presentation by Charles M. Smith, Vice President, SBA Specialist Business Banking at Eastern Bank.

Eastern Bank understands how vital small businesses are to helping our local economy grow and flourish. We also know that securing capital is one of the biggest challenges for early stage businesses. Our commitment to SBA lending has helped us earn the distinction as the #1 SBA lender in Massachusetts for four consecutive years. In addition, Eastern Bank was also named the #1 SBA lender in New England for 2010, 2011 and 2012.

"Eastern Bank is focused on helping businesses and consumers succeed - that's our role in the market and it should be the role of every bank" said Richard Holbrook, Chariman and CEO of Eastern Bank.

And Finally...
Fred in ohioI just finished reading John Meachem's biography, Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power.
The book chronicles Jefferson's political career from the pre-revolutionary days to his death. The amazing thing about the book is how the topics of his day are remarkably similar to the topics of ours. We seem to think that the political divisiveness we experience today is something new. Some seem to believe that this Congress is the first obstructionist Congress.  Some seem to believe that this President is the first President who has not reached across the aisle in search of compromise.  Not so. Jefferson was a founder of the Republican-Democratic party that felt the revolution was threatened by the Federalist Party (led by Hamilton and to certain degree Adams), whom he believed wanted America to return to British rule. The Federalists believed Jefferson's party was a "mobocracy".  Political hatred, obstruction and nullification were just as present then as they are today. Little did I realize that it was Massachusetts and Connecticut that seriously considered leaving the union because it was felt that Jefferson's policies were inconsistent with their Federalist principles.   The vitriol between the parties was probably more intense then they are today. Image how long the news cycle would be if a sitting Vice President (Aaron Burr) killed a former Treasury Secretary (Alexander Hamilton) in a duel. Or imagine a President with two sets of children, one white and one black; one slave and one free. The overwhelming themes of the book are that great leaders are human with human contradictions and shortcomings, but these do not dim their brightest lights and greatest contributions;  that politics is the art of compromise; and that perfection in a person or in a system is impossible.   Interestingly, there are many who believe that our Constitution is a perfect document, inviolable in its principles.  They often invoke the Founding Fathers and their divine inspiration.  The author of Declaration of Independence was not so dogmatic or divinely inspired about even the words from his own pen and others who authored the Constitution he inspired.  Today we debate the Second Amendment as if it too was conceived by a divinity that cannot be changed, when in fact it was conceived at a time when there was no standing army.  These are weighty topics and far removed it may seem from minority business development, but I think the connective thread is stronger than meets the eye.  We are still struggling with the dark remnants of our history and our attempts in the past to make it right.  Today we can all learn from the great political philosophers and leaders of the past who also struggled with the challenges of their day that impact us in our time just as the decisions we make today will impact our children and our great grandchildren as we too strive for a more perfect union.

In your service,

Dr. Fred
