Gary Stiffler to Speak at GNEMSDC Expo

gary stifflerGary Stiffler, President and CEO of the The MATLET Group will be the Keynote Luncheon Speaker on Monday, October 3 at the GNEMSDC Business Opportunity Fair and Expo. Mr. Stiffler is a member of the GNEMSDC Board of Directors and The MATLET Group is member of the prestigious NMSDC Corporate Plus group of large certified MBEs. Mr. Stiffler will be focusing his remarks on "Opportunities Certified MBEs have with Large MBEs". We are very pleased to have this successful MBE come and talk about this important topic.

"The MATLET Group, headquartered in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, is made up of two manufacturing companies, Central Florida Press and Packaging Graphics; and a fulfillment company, NOVA Marketing Services.

Our company combines the strength of its technology and equipment with the development of creative solutions to serve our clients' ultimate objectives - whether it's a promotional campaign, beautiful sales materials, durable and creative product packaging, or warehousing and distribution.

We bring together the customer service and responsiveness of well-managed, local printing and fulfillment businesses with the strength, capacity and efficiencies of a larger corporation."

Corporate and MBE Showcases

On Tuesday afternoon, October 4 we will have the MBE and Corporate Showcases. These showcases are 15-20 minute presentations by corporate members and MBEs that highlight their businesses. For corporate members, we are asking for your representative to talk about the keys to successfully becoming a supplier to your company. Corporate members can also use the time to highlight opportunities coming up with their companies. This is an excellent and efficient way to get an unfiltered uninterrupted message out to a large number of certified MBEs. The showcase program should be exciting because we will have up to 40 corporate members presenting over a 3 hour period and up to 4 corporate showcases taking place simultaneously. And if that is not enough, we will also have MBE showcases taking place over the same period as the corporate showcases. The MBE showcases are down to two remaining spots! Corporate members who have completed their presentation are encouraged to visit the MBE showcases. We will have plenty of "traffic cops" to direct our guests to the right rooms. It is going to be hectic, fun, and informative. We need more corporate members to sign up for these. Please call Jerilynn Clarke at 888-874-7114 to reserve your space.

And Finally...

Fred in ohio

Labor Day is a much needed vacation for people who spend long hours commuting and working in order to provide a living for themselves and their families. But i imagine few people today know the origins of this holiday. Labor Day came about because of violent labor unrest associated with a strike of railroad workers against the Pullman Palace Car Company in 1894. Pullman had lowered wages on workers who were already working 16 hour days. The U.S. Army was brought in to break up the strike, killing 13 workers and injurying close to 100. President Grover Cleveland in an effort to create labor peace with the unanimous approval of Congress created the first Federal Labor Day holiday, on September 5, 1894. We have come a long way since those turbulent days. The 1894 strike occurred during one of the worst recessions in U.S. history, the "Panic of 1893". Today the economy is suffering from economic uncertainty that is taking a tremendous toll particularly on Black and Hispanic workers. The Labor Department, which was created as a result of the 1894 holiday, reported last week that Black unemployment reached its highest level, (16.7 percent) in over 27 years. (White unemployment declined to 8 percent in August.) For young minority workers rates are even higher and disturbingly unemployment rates for African American males in some urban areas exceed 50 percent! So this labor day is not a time for celebration in many households around the country. The solutions to minority unemployment are multifaceted and complex, however, we know that minority businesses are more likely than non-minority businesses to hire minority employees. It is reasonable to believe that growing minority businesses is part of the solution facing minority communities nationwide. So if the leaders of large corporations want to know what they can do to help solve this problem, they can start by buying more from high quality competitive minority businesses. In this way Labor Day will become a respite from work and not just another day without work.

In your service,

Dr. Fred
