State of Massachusetts Reports MBE and WBE Spend - Big Spend and Big Increases Set the Path for Other States in the Region

Deval Patrick

Deval Patrick, Governor of Massachusetts

The State of Massachusetts Supplier Diversity Program recently reported its performance and spending with minority and women owned enterprises. The report highlights that the State of MA spent over $757 million with certified MBEs and WBEs. The State of MA established separate benchmarks and reporting for MBEs as opposed to WBEs, unlike the State of Connecticut, the second largest state in terms of public expenditures in New England. Massachusetts spent $514.4 million with certified MBEs in fiscal year 2010, a 70 percent increase over their MBE spend in 2009. Spending with certified MBEs represented over 12.4 percent of all state spending. Spending with WBEs in 2010 were $750.8 million or 18 percent of total spending. By comparison, the State of Connecticut spent $4.1 million, less than 1.5 percent with racial/ethnic MBEs and less than 6 percent with certified WBEs. (Article in the Hartford Courant yesterday on this subject.) We congratulate the State of MA for a job well done. Specific kudos to Governor Patrick for his leadership.

And Finally...

Fred in ohio

I was listening to a report on the BBC this weekend on corporate communication, specifically written corporate communication. The premise of story was that corporations have lost the art of effective communication by tailoring their communication so as not to offend or simply to sound like every other corporation. Take almost any corporate mission statement and it will speak to the commitments to shareholders, customers, employees, community and the environment. Well, is it all true? Do the communications of corporate America reveal the soul of the company, its leadership and its relationships with all stakeholders? Are corporate communications missing out on the ability to connect more effectively with their constituents and stakeholders? The answer given in the report is that corporations need to shed their "corporate speak" style and risk telling their stories. Corporations and their leaders need authenticity over political correctness. We hear political correctness all the time on matters of diversity in general and supplier diversity in particular. What corporate leader in today's world would dare to say that diversity is not important for their company, or their personal goals. I doubt there are any, even if by their actions diversity is barely on their radar screen. Effective communications are not a substitute for actions. Achieving goals in diversity cannot be accomplished simply with well designed sentences and $40 words. Leaders become leaders because they discover their voice. It would be ashamed if those very leaders lose their voice on matters that are important to them in order to fit a mold that fails to move the hearts and souls of the very people they need to impact.

Dr. Fred
