| The GNEMSDC Quarterly Meeting is coming up on Friday December 3 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at United Technologies Corporation in Farmington, CT at Four Farm Springs Road. The agenda for this Quarterly will include showcases by three MBEs, a presentation on exporting goods and services to the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China), and a presentation by the UTC supplier development team. The export presentation will replace the seminar scheduled on November 9. Here is a message from UTC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Louis R. | The Business Consortium Fund ("BCF") has initiated a new accounts receivable financing program for NMSDC certified MBEs. The new BCF program can provide access to account receivable (factoring) loans to MBEs financing a minimum of $10,000 in receivables. The BCF has formed an alliance with Riviera Finance ("Riviera") to bring this financing source to MBEs. While receivables financing is available from many sources, a unique aspect of the new BCF program is that it seeks to leverage some of the BCF's capital and participate in the loans under certain circumstances. In many cases, the BCF participation in the loan will result in a lower overall cost to the MBEs. There is no application fee or set-up fee in connection with this program and the MBE is not required to make a long term commitment to or finance all of its receivables through the program. Riviera is an experienced receivables lender that has worked with a number of businesses in diverse industries. | On Dec. 6, 2010 at 6:00 pm, the CHBA and Zeldes, Needle & Cooper will present guest speaker Diane Alverio, a former CHBA awards recipient and nationally known Hartford - based communications consultant with over 20 years of marketing expertise. Ms. Alverio is the author of Beyond the Shingle, a comprehensive "field guide" to building a successful law practice for solo practitioners and small firms. At this event, Ms. Alverio will provide guidance in growing one's legal practice, including marketing concepts, public relations skills, interview techniques, branding your practice and developing effective Web sites, among many other marketing tools and strategies.  I have much to be thankful for. In fact, when I reflect upon how fortunate I am to be where I am at this time and place, I can only marvel at the wonder bounty of my circumstances. John Maynard Keynes the great English economists writing in the book the Economic Consequences of the Peace expressed a similar feeling he had prior to the start of the First World War when he stated, "The inhabitant of London could order by telephone, sipping his morning tea in bed, the various products of the whole earth, in such quantity as he might see fit, and reasonably expect their early delivery upon his doorstep; he could at the same moment and by the same means adventure his wealth in the natural resources and new enterprises of any quarter of the world, and share, without exertion or even trouble, in their prospective fruits and advantages; or he could decide to couple the security of his fortunes with the good faith of the townspeople of any substantial municipality in any continent that fancy or information might recommend." War changed all of this in Keynes' time, but if you reflect on where we are, or at least, where I am, despite all of the discontent the anxiety, the economic insecurity, and political upheavels there is much still to be thankful for.
