  • February 12, 2014 - Kickoff for the Diverse Supplier Development Academy
    (DSDA) program in Hartford.  This is a collaborative effort between the DSDA and the GNEMSDC.  The programs's purpose is to assist Category 1 MBEs achieve more rapid growth with the help of corporate and academic mentors.  
  • February 18-20 - "Growing to Scale" MBE Education program to take place at the MBE Training Center at 333 State Street Bridgeport CT.  The Growing to Scale Workshop is a two and half day program that will help MBEs become more profitable.  In addition the second day will focus on the important topic of strategic alliances and acquisitions.  Save the Dates!  More to follow.

Small Business Innovation Research ( SBIR) is a highly competitive federal program that encourages small businesses to explore their technological potential.  It provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization by funding qualified small businesses in the nation's R&D arena.   
The permanent site, located on River Street in Bridgeport, is scheduled to open in late 2013.  The Bridgeport factory has approximately 8,000 square feet and will be used for both Phase II research and the beginning of commercialization.  Learn more here.

 The following editorial was published by the Hartford Business Journal last Monday, December 16, 2013.

The Greater New England Minority Supplier Development Council (GNEMSDC) is the largest minority business development organization in New England. The GNEMSDC is a corporate membership organization that includes Connecticut companies such as Northeast Utilities, United Technologies, Xerox, Pitney Bowes, Cartus, General Electric, The MDC, The Hartford, Aetna, The University of Connecticut, Yale New Haven Health Care and over 200 more large corporations in the state and region. The mission of the organization is to help these large corporations source goods and services with certified minority business enterprises (MBEs). The GNEMSDC has over 500 MBEs in our direct network and as the regional affiliate of the NMSDC is part of a network that includes over 3,500 corporate members and 12,000 certified MBEs who in 2012 had combined sales of over $120 billion. It is from the perspective of the leader of this organization that I will share with the readers of the Hartford Business Journal, the State of Minority Business in Connecticut.

Each for the past three years, the GNEMSDC has surveyed our certified MBEs to determine how they are doing. In addition, using data which certified MBEs supply as part of the certification process, we are able to track their sales, their employment and their general business performance. The data in this article reflects 2012 MBE data. It is also important to note that the data on certified GNEMSDC MBEs does not include all minority businesses in the state. The majority of minority businesses are not suppliers to large corporate organizations. They are retailers, barber shops, day care providers, attorneys, doctors, funeral homes, church based businesses and other business to consumer enterprises. The GNEMSDC however, does provide a barometer of business and economic conditions in minority communities throughout the state and the region.

In 2012, the GNEMSDC has 124 certified MBEs with another 65 going through the process. The 124 MBEs had combined sales of $322,861,291. The average sales for certified MBEs was slightly over $2.6 million. These CT based certified MBEs employed 2,587 workers. The largest concentration of MBEs by industry is Professional, Scientific and Technical Service companies that represent 46 percent of certified MBEs. This followed by MBEs in construction (23%), Construction (12.1%), and Wholesale Trade (12.1).

In a state with 3.6 million citizens, 88,000 business establishments, and 1.4 million workers, MBEs are barely a drop in the bucket. We are extremely proud of the MBEs that have overcome great odds and barriers to be significant organizations and leaders in their communities. But these numbers relative to size of the State's economy suggests that we still have a very long way to go before, MBEs play a role commensurate with the population of minorities in the state. In 2010, Hispanics (14.2%), Blacks (11.2%), Asians (4.2), Multi-Race (2.1%) and Native Americans (.6%) represented 32.2 percent of the state's population. All minority businesses (suppliers and minority retailers) represented 12.4 percent of business establishments. Based on these numbers, minority businesses are underrepresented among all businesses in the state.

There are several reasons why MBEs continue to be underrepresented.  The first is that MBEs suffer from a lack of personal wealth which impacts their ability to get loans from financial institutions. In the study done by Shapiro, Meshede,and Osoro of Brandeis University, they found that the Black - White wealth gap tripled between 1984 and 2009, from $84,000 to over $239,000. The median wealth of Black households nationally is less than $10,000. It is hard to finance a business if the owners and their families do not have the personal financial capital to grow the business.

There are other problems related to discrimination in housing markets, poor education systems, lack of social capital and generally being unconnected that make it difficult for minority businesses to thrive in the state. But the one factor that perhaps could have the biggest impact, but hasn't, is the role of state government.

The State of Connecticut is one of the largest buyers of goods and services in the state, yet purchased an anemic $4 million from certified MBEs (2008). This represents less than 1 percent of purchases by the state. In contrast, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with nearly twice the population of Connecticut, spends 70 times as much with certified MBEs and over 100 times as much from non-minority women owned enterprises. The only reason for this gaping difference between the two New England states is the culture of political leadership on matters of minority economic development.     Two Massachusetts governors, Weld and Patrick, a Republican and a Democrat, have issued executive orders clearly stating that the Commonwealth understands the importance of minority business development and Connecticut leadership either does not or is and has been completely ineffective.   These governors established goals for state agencies and a reporting mechanism for the leaders of those agencies to follow.

The political culture can be changed in Connecticut, and I would add it does not require a disparity study. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been able to achieve these impressive results without a disparity study. If Connecticut spending with MBEs was similar on a percentage basis as spending with MBEs in Massachusetts, Connecticut MBEs would have an additional $100 million in sales. Imagine the multiplier impact of that spending in communities like Hartford, Bridgeport, New Haven, and Waterbury.

In the meantime, minority businesses in Connecticut will continue operate on the fringes. It will take both political and business leadership to change this, but I believe it can be done. This is the mission of the GNEMSDC.

Greetings GNEMSDC MBEs:  

As some of you might know, Gary Stiffler's 2 year term as the GNEMSDC Chair ends on December 31, 2013.  He will not be running for the next term. Thanks to Gary for all his commitment, hard work, and the contributions.

As the MBEIC Chair Election Committee Chair, I am reaching out to you to advise you that we have just initiated the process to elect the MBEIC Chair for the 2014-2015 term!  The election will include five key steps:
Step 1. Solicit nominations and self-nominations from those interested in this position (This process starts with this email and nominations & self nominations are due by 5:00 PM EST, Wednesday, December  11.  ACT NOW!
 
Step 2. Confirmation of Nominees' intent to run for this position and the completed  "Candidate Platform Documents" due before 5 PM EST, December 16.
 
Step 3. The ballot for voting, along with each candidate's Platform Documents are emailed to MBEs on December 16 evening.
 
Step 4.  All completed ballots from MBEs are due back by 5:00 PM EST on December 20.
 
As you can see, the timing is VERY tight and your help and high level of participation is key to our success with this.

·      Any certified MBE in good standing with the council can vote for the MBEIC Chair
·      The elections process is open to all qualified MBEs 
 
What's the process?
 
·      An Elections Committee has formed 
·      Any Certified MBE can nominate him/herself.
·      Any Certified MBE can nominate another MBE from the same council.
·      Each candidate submits his/her platform (All candidates' platforms must be attached to their Nomination form).
·      Voting ballots will be created and made available
·      Election will take place, votes will be tallied and the winner will be announced.

And Finally...
 At the beginning of this year, the GNEMSDC had 11employees including myself.  As we close out the year, we have grown to  17 employees.  This growth allows us to concentrate resources on MBE and corporate services in ways that help them reach their goals.  As a service organization, we only exist to help our MBEs grow and our corporate members reach their goals.  I am fortunate to have a wonderful team of professional colleagues who take their jobs and responsibilities with the greatest attention to detail and quality.  For this I am extremely thankful. 

I am also thankful for a caring and thoughtful board of directors who have provided me with the opportunity to lead.  Leadership does not mean that you get everything right the first time.  But leadership combined with the direction provided by the GNEMSDC board has made it possible for the GNEMSDC to once again experience top-line growth at over 35 percent. 

And finally, I am thankful for each of our MBEs and corporate members who look to the GNEMSDC, our staff and our board to support their efforts.  We hope to continue serving you in 2014.  This being the last newsletter of the year, I must offer my sincere thanks and best wishes to all this holiday season.

Greetings GNEMSDC MBEs:  

As some of you might know, Gary Stiffler's 2 year term as the GNEMSDC Chair ends on December 31, 2013.  He will not be running for the next term. Thanks to Gary for all his commitment, hard work, and the contributions.

As the MBEIC Chair Election Committee Chair, I am reaching out to you to advise you that we have just initiated the process to elect the MBEIC Chair for the 2014-2015 term!  The election will include five key steps:
Step 1. Solicit nominations and self-nominations from those interested in this position (This process starts with this email and nominations & self nominations are due by 5:00 PM EST, Wednesday, December  11.  ACT NOW!
Step 2. Confirmation of Nominees' intent to run for this position and the completed  "Candidate Platform Documents" due before 5 PM EST, December 16.
Step 3. The ballot for voting, along with each candidate's Platform Documents are emailed to MBEs on December 16 evening.
Step 4.  All completed ballots from MBEs are due back by 5:00 PM EST on December 20.
As you can see, the timing is VERY tight and your help and high level of participation is key to our success with this.

Who can run?
·      Any certified MBE in our council or a certified reciprocal MBE in good standing with their home Council
·      MBE must have a minimum of two (2) year as an "Active" member of the council/MBEIC that he/she is representing
Who can vote?
·      Any certified MBE in good standing with the council can vote for the MBEIC Chair
·      The elections process is open to all qualified MBEs 
What's the process?
·      An Elections Committee has formed 
·      Any Certified MBE can nominate him/herself.
·      Any Certified MBE can nominate another MBE from the same council.
·      Each candidate submits his/her platform (All candidates' platforms must be attached to their Nomination form).
·      Voting ballots will be created and made available
·      Election will take place, votes will be tallied and the winner will be announced.

Small Business Innovation Research 
Small Business Innovation Research ( SBIR) is a highly competitive federal program that encourages small businesses to explore their technological potential.  It provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization by funding qualified small businesses in the nation's R&D arena.   
The permanent site, located on River Street in Bridgeport, is scheduled to open in late 2013.  The Bridgeport factory has approximately 8,000 square feet and will be used for both Phase II research and the beginning of commercialization.  Learn more here. 
And Finally...
Every week is busy for everybody it seems.  Last Thursday, we had a very productive board of directors meeting at the offices of SAI Systems of Shelton, CT.  This was followed by a Quarterly meeting, featuring United Rentals, The Metropolitan District Commission and Pitney Bowes.  An this was followed by the CT Holiday Business Card Exchange.  Unfortunately, I had to miss the Quarterly and the CT-HBCE because of a commitment I made over a year ago to speak at the South Florida MSDC Symposium 2013.  So after the board meeting I hurried down to Newark Airport to catch my 5 PM flight.  I arrived at 3:00 PM and settled in - and settled in - and settled in.  The flight was delayed, it was a bad weather day to begin with so it was not a total surprise that the flight was delayed. We waited and waited and waited.  Finally at 10:45 PM the airline announced to over 200 very frustrated passengers that the flight was canceled and that the flight would leave at 8:00 AM on Friday.  Well that did me no good since I was scheduled to speak in Florida at 9:00 AM. So I apologized to my host and returned home.  The only good thing about my time at Newark Airport was that I got a lot of work done!

But I was so looking forward to speaking on a subject near and dear to my heart; influencing others.  In this case, part of my speech to corporate members of the SFMSDC was going to be on how supplier diversity professionals can influence leaders and decision makers within their own organizations and with other large vendors and customers.   As the readers of this column know, supplier diversity success requires not only committed and knowledgeable supplier diversity professionals, it requires that those supplier diversity professionals exercise influence over decision makers, whether they be buyers or C-level executives.  

I was going to retell a story that is in one of my favorite books, and one that I think every MBE and aspiring leader should read, The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene.  In one chapter on influencing people, Green states that you are more successful influencing others by your actions not your words.  He tells the story of Michelangelo and the statue of David.  Apparently, the original David was sculpted from a block of stone that had been discarded because a previous sculptor had damaged it beyond repair.  One of the leaders in Florence at the time wanted to salvage the block of stone so he commissioned Michelangelo.  

Michelangelo finished the work, but the Florentine leader insisted that David's nose was too large.  So Michelangelo, instead of arguing with the leader and future benefactor, took some stone dust in one hand and his chisel in another, climbed the scaffold and started to move the chisel back and forth near the  nose and let the stone dust drop from his hand.  But Michelangelo was not chiseling the nose.  He was only appearing to do so.  After a couple of minutes of this in the presence of the leader-critic, Michelangelo announced -"much better".  The leader-critic agreed that the nose was now perfect, even though nothing had been done physically to the nose or the statue.  

Michelangelo knew that he would have never won an argument with the leader-critic-future benefactor. And even if he did, he would have lost a future supporter.  So he convinced him with actions not words.  

Now some are probably reading this and concluding, yes the leader-critic-benefactor was satisfied, but he was also deceived.  But I would argue that the deception here was self-deception based on ego, and in this case art triumphed over ego.  

Supplier diversity professionals are often reliant on the resources and decisions of others in order to successfully assist minority businesses.  This lesson, that actions and not words, is a very important to remember and apply.  Sometimes the action is a lost contract because the company did not have a robust response when it came to supplier diversity.  Losing a multimillion dollar contract is a much more powerful action than anything a supplier diversity professional can say.   Or, winning a contract because the company has a particularly strong supplier diversity solution is better than lecturing to internal decisions makers on why they should do something.   

As a professional talker and writer, I know I am guilty of using words too often instead of actions, so this is a lesson I will need to apply more myself. I hope the action of including this note in the newsletter is more powerful than my expression of how sorry I am that I could not be with my friends in South Florida this past Friday, or my GNEMSDC colleagues at the Quarterly Meeting and HBCE in Connecticut.  I was at Newark Airport.
